About

MISSION STATEMENT
The Queer Commons is a community-based organization dedicated to developing and supporting free educational events by and for queer and LGBT folks, particularly people of color, noncitizens, low-income folks, trans, gender nonconforming, genderqueer and intersex people, and all those who exist outside of the gay mainstream. Our events, which include peer-led discussion groups, panels, participatory workshops and more, promote dialogue around social justice-based themes, support the health and well-being of the queer community, empower queer organizing, and encourage new leadership from within the queer community. Our current initiatives include the Queer Commons Community Workgroups, a bi-monthly series of peer-led queer theory reading and discussion sessions; The Queer Book Swap, a semi-annual book exchange to encourage resource-sharing within the queer community; The Homosexual Agenda, a crowdsourced online calendar and weekly newsletter of queer events; and the LGBTQ Mental Health/Social Service Providers Discussion Group, a space to encourage peer learning among providers serving the queer community.

CO-SPONSORSHIPS

We are dedicated to supporting and advancing the efforts of other organizations serving New York’s queer community, and we are proud to co-sponsor events. To date, the Queer Commons has co-sponsored Trans Day of Action 2011 (June 2011), the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers (December 2010) and the 2nd Annual Coat Drive for LGBTQ Youth (December 2010), a benefit for MCCNY Homeless Youth Services/Sylvia’s Place. If you would like the Queer Commons to co-sponsor your event, please contact the Steering Committee. We can also help get the word out by adding your event to The Homosexual Agenda.
